Gig work videos offering the downsides

Stories of low pay, high costs abound

Broke and burnt-out Uber drivers, Door-dashers and other gig workers are taking to YouTube in recent months, complaining of long hours, high costs and low pay.

“You’re working way into the evening, Saturdays and Sundays…who wants to work weekends? Those are human hours, nobody wants to work those,” notes one surprised driver.

“One day you might make $150, then the next day you might make $50. You never know what’s coming. A paycheque would be nice.”

Even YouTubers who launched their channels giving tips and advice on who to succeed as an Uber driver are quitting or advising others not to invest too much time or money.

Levi Spires, whose YouTube channel “Tip You in the App” recently announced to his audience of paid subscribers that he is looking for different work.

“What’s hard is trying to make real money when your income is controlled by an algorithm you can’t see, predict, or beat….you’re not going to be able to beat the algorithm.”
