Vaughan cancels auto-camera ticketing program
32,000 tickets issued in just 3 weeks
Vaughan City Council has voted to cancel its automated camera speed ticketing program in a special meeting organized so quickly, no documents were made available to view.
After placing its speed camera program on hold in June, Vaughan City Council held a special committee meeting on Monday, where Mayor Steven Del Duca put forward a motion to remove the cameras and shut down the program altogether. Council then voted and approved the decision, the Toronto Star reported on September 15.
“Across most of our city wards, it wasn’t unique to one part of the city, (we heard) a very strong, clear, loud, exuberant message from our residents that they do support the goal of slowing things down on roads to protect everybody, but this particular mechanism was something they didn’t feel was fair,” said Del Duca.
Vaughan rolled out its 10 speed cameras earlier this year. In the first three weeks of the program, 32,000 tickets were issued. Residents complained to their elected officials, who voted 7-3 to cancel the program on Monday.
