New York wants Amazon drivers to be employees
New York City Council members held a hearing July 2nd on legislation that would require companies like Amazon to directly employ delivery workers instead of relying on contractors.
The bill, known as the “Delivery Protection Act” and introduced by Councilmember Tiffany Cabán, was discussed before the Council’s Committee on Consumer and Worker Protection.
If passed, the legislation would require companies like Amazon to hire all delivery drivers directly. It would also mandate that smaller companies used for final deliveries — known as Delivery Service Partners, or DSPs — obtain city licenses. These partners often handle same-day or last-mile deliveries, the final step before packages reach customers.
The bill has majority support in the Council, according to The Spectrum Report. The next step is for the speaker to schedule a committee vote before it moves to the full Council for final consideration.
Amazon submitted written testimony opposing the bill, saying it could harm small businesses and disrupt service.
