Enough with the fancy-schmantzy conversations: cap numbers now

“TTC, Taxi, Uber, Lyft…everybody is suffering”

A driver identified only as “Ali P” in Executive Committee meeting minutes perhaps phrased it best when he told Councillors, “Stop the shenanigans!”

“Please, rather than having so many fancy-schmantzy conversations and political agendas, we need action now,” Ali summarized.

“Uber has so much power over the city of Toronto…. these shenanigans must be stopped, because not only is it costing the TTC $70 million annually, Taxi drivers, Uber drivers Lyft drivers, they don’t make any money, TTC is not making any money.

“Everybody is suffering. I don’t know why do we have to have this kind of big meeting here, so with many people here, and none of us are coming to any sense. In order to control these shenanigans we have to stop it: put a cap on it,” Ali stated bluntly, in a direct departure from the attitude of Councillors who appear ready to wait almost a year to decide whether Toronto needs 5,500 or 55,000 ground transportation vehicles.

“Please, just take action now, without postponing it for November 2024. Right? Guaranteed by November 2024, you’re going to postpone it again. This is study was started 10 years ago during John Tory and I don’t know why do we need to have more studies.

“The study said per 1000 people in Toronto, we need one Uber or one Lyft, which means other 3 million people are living in Toronto, we just need 3000, Uber and 3000 lift, which is 6000. You don’t need 62,000 or 70,000 Uber and Lyft drivers,” Ali summarized in less than five minutes.

Toronto will wait until November, 2024 to review the staff report.
