RDAO calls for Uber drivers’ boycott of 407
Reimbursement of fees at issue
It has come to the attention of The Rideshare Drivers Association of Ontario (RDAO) that by design or incompetence, Uber has stopped paying its Driver-Workers their toll fees associated with trips routed by the Uber Route Maps or Rider requests over the last 4-6 weeks.
When Driver-Workers bring it to the attention of Customer Support through Fare Reviews, they are being met with any of five responses, up to and including deactivation all in contravention of their Toll Reimbursement Policy found on their website and confirmed by Uber Policy Staff in Toronto.
- Denial that the 407 Highway is a Toll Route
- Require the Driver-Worker provide a cash receipt for reimbursement.
- Deny payment of screenshots of the 407 TOD Toll Calculator
- Require that the Driver-Worker wait until their monthly 407 statement be received, then reconcile their monthly trip statement with their 407 bill and provide evidence to UBER and request reimbursement. This is an undue hardship for Driver-Workers and amounts to UBER discouraging Driver-Workers from seeking their Toll Reimbursements.
- Deactivate Driver-Workers who ask for “too many” fare reviews due to the missing toll payments.
The RDAO considers the fail-to-pay tolls as a breach of the terms and conditions (The Contract) between the Driver-Workers and Uber. It is clear to the RDAO that the calculation and immediate payment of Toll Fees to the Driver-Workers is Uber’s liability, as it has always been.
Until further notice, the RDAO advises Uber driver-workers to avoid using the 407 toll highway and to use alternate non-toll routes.
The RDAO recognizes that not using the 407 toll routes may cause surge, lengthen trips and elevate rider fares and we ask the public to please understand and be patient while Uber sorts out and ends what amounts to a latest version of Driver-Worker wage theft.
