Gordie Howe Bridge opening delayed to 2026

No detail or reason provided for delay

The October opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge has been delayed. Although no press release has been posted to the project’s website, spokesperson Heather Grondin confirmed the delay to the Windsor Star on October 15th.

“The exact opening date will depend on our ongoing quality reviews, testing and commissioning,” said chief relations officer Heather Grondin, who floated “early 2026” as a possible opening date.

“The exact opening date will depend on our ongoing quality reviews, testing and commissioning. We also need to give sufficient time for our operating teams and border agencies to be ready to operate this new and modern land border crossing between the U.S. and Canada.”

“It’s the first reference I’ve seen specifically mentioning a 2026 opening, versus ‘Fall 2025,’” note Scott Ryan on the Friends of the Gordie Howe Detroit/Windsor International Bridge page.
