“These highways needed to be four-laned decades ago”

Stories from the Road author Don Taylor happened by just some of the accidents which took place in Northern Ontario on the weekend of March 25/26th and forwarded photos to Road Warrior News.

“The first two were just north of Sault Ste. Marie; The last four just happened about 21:00 on the 26th. Looks like it’s near the time zone marker west of Thunder Bay.  These highways needed to be four-laned decades ago. If British Columbia can four-lane the Trans Canada through the mountains, then Ontario can sure as hell do it through the Canadian Shield.”

These accidents follow a week which included a press conference held by members of NDP northern caucus members calling for better training and highway maintenance in the north.

“We recognize that the North has unique transportation challenges. Vast distances between communities, winter storms and the natural landscape can make it harder for people to get around,” Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney has acknowledged. “That’s why we have developed this Northern Ontario Transportation Plan. It includes more than 60 actions that will get more people moving, improve travel options for people in remote communities and support economic growth in the North.”
