On Wednesday, February 14, Gig Workers around the globe are rallying in solidarity and collective action.  In Toronto, workers are expected to gather at Toronto City’s Hall’s south lawn at 9am for remarks by MPP Chris Glover before parading to Uber Canada’s head office on Bloor Street East.

“Our primary impact in Canada will be in Toronto, the largest rideshare market in Canada and one of the biggest by Uber world-wide.  Rideshare and delivery drivers are joining forces to take a stand against the ongoing exploitation by gig corporations, which reap immense profits from the labour of gig workers but fall short in treating workers with the respect and fairness they rightfully deserve,” notes the group’s website.

“On this day, we call upon all fellow drivers to unite with us by turning off your apps. This is our opportunity to send a powerful message, and by standing together, we can make a significant impact.  It’s time for all of us to amplify our voices and demand respect, fair wages, and working conditions that allow us to thrive as essential service providers upon whom our communities depend upon.

Our strength lies in our unity, and as we collectively deactivate our apps and send a resounding message, we can be the catalyst for change.  On this day, please stand in solidarity with your fellow drivers.  Additionally, we invite you to join us in Toronto at Nathan Phillips Square as we demonstrate our unity.  We will convene in the Square at 9 am, near the TORONTO sign.”
