The Ontario government is currently reviewing submissions received on the “2+1 highway pilot” on Highway 11 north of North Bay.

“The RFP (request for proposals) for consultant to undertake the design and environmental assessment was issued in November 2022. MTO is currently reviewing the submissions received,” Simi Ikotun, Senior Issues Advisor at the Ministry of Transportation told Road Warrior News in an email on February 28th.

A 2+1 highway is a three-lane highway with a centre passing lane that changes direction approximately every two to five kilometres. The highway model is used in other jurisdictions around the world and is more cost efficient than twinning a highway.

“The next milestone is the awarding of the contract for the design and EA assessment of both potential sites. We expect to be in a position to award the contract in the coming months.”
