Shuniah inspection station closed again

Should open “At least 16 hours per day on business days:” Truckers for Safer Highways

Travis McDougall of Truckers for Safer Highways dropped in on the Shuniah (Thunder Bay) inspection station and found it closed, again.

“It’s only been open twice in all the times I’ve driven past, since it opened last March,” McDougall says in a video recorded this week. “I go past here every week…We are calling for all the inspection stations to be open 16 hours per day, every business day of the week.

“We are calling for a change, we are supporting those who are willing to listen, and those who are advocates for safer highways for all,” the group notes on its Facebook page.

On February 1, McDougall made a statement noting,

“We, being Truckers for Safer Highways, have urged the Minister of Transportation to implement concrete improvements in training and enforcement across the province. However, to date, we’ve received no indication of their willingness to take action, despite the minister’s attendance at the opening of a new inspection station near Shania, Ontario in March of 2024.

“This station remains frequently closed. I personally witnessed this weekly, and it’s clear to us that limited operation of these inspection stations are insufficient. After three years of tireless advocacy, we’ve seen no progress. None.”

For the provincial election taking place in 2025, the group has decided it will not endorse any particular party, but will support candidates on an individual basis. While they are endorsing three Northern Ontario NDP members Guy Bourgouin, Lise Vaugeois, and John Vanthof, they have released an open letter to voters in Brampton-South riding of Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria asking, “As you cast your vote in this election, we urge you to reflect on important question: Do you feel safe on our roads and highways?”
