September rideshare pilot reviews
Law enforcement agencies to participate
Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation will host at least two review sessions of its rideshare pilot project during September.
According to an email obtained by Taxi News, the purpose of the sessions will be “to gather stakeholder perspectives to inform any future considerations of a broader provincial framework for rideshare services.”
The first videoconference session on September 21st will include the Police Association of Ontario; the Ontario Provincial Police; and the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police.
The second session, scheduled for September 23rd, will include stakeholders including northern Ontario Taxi operators and the Canadian Taxi Association. According the MTO email, this consultation session will be focused on the following discussion topics:
“Role of Taxi Sector and Community Transportation Needs: How taxis serve distinct community needs.
Impacts to Taxi Sector: Provincial framework impacts and potential mitigation strategies.
Canadian Taxi Association (CTA) Proposal: Review of the CTA’s proposal for the framework’s potential next phase.”
Both the Canandian Taxi Association and the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police support safety measures including in-car security cameras; a centralized provincial registry of commercial drivers and vehicles; and clear, current visual identification standards.
