Omar Alghabra announces he will not run in next election
Canada’s Transport Minister Omar Alghabra is stepping down as Minister and has announced he will not run for parliament in the next election.
In an announcement video posted to Twitter on July 25th, Alghabra notes, “As the Minister of Transport, I helped lead our country during many challenging periods. We protected Canadians during COVID, while supporting the transportation during an extraordinary period.” There is no mention of the fact that his own actions during this time helped trigger the Truckers’ Freedom Convoy in February, 2021.
Alghabra will be replaced as Transport Minister in cabinet shuffle expected to occur on Wednesday, July 26th.
I have news to share: after a lot of reflection, I decided to not run in the next election. As a result I will be stepping aside from cabinet. I was first elected in 2006 and have had the journey of a lifetime. I’m grateful for every minute of it pic.twitter.com/1dNM28YRnN
