June 16th for Gordie Howe bridge connection?
Tension mounts as gap disappears
Detroit social media pages and posts are floating June 16th as the date for “connection” of the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
Taking and posting shots of the bridge from below by boat; from above by drone; and from the shore on both sides of the border has become a popular trend in recent weeks. These posts have begun speculating on when connection will occur.
“I hope there will be a Canadian construction worker and an American construction worker shaking hands when the connection occurs,” writes one enthusiast. “June 16th they will be connecting both sides,” writes Jeff Hana, who appears to be one of the construction workers.
“Even though it will appear the bridge is completed, there is still plenty of work remaining before the bridge opens in fall 2025. Crews will stress stay cables and install electrical, fire suppression and drainage systems, barriers, signage, lighting, deck paving, and pavement markings and complete the multi-use path,” the Detroit-Windsor Bridge Authority writes in a recent press release. The release notes that the last of the girders should be completed by mid-June; there is no information yet posted on any celebrations or official observances when this occurs.
