Your choices determine whether you exist in a prison, or live free in the wide-open spaces

No Johnny Cash or Merle Haggard song about prison ever hit me as hard as staring at that structure: it was huge. Thinking about who was in there and why had a sobering effect.

Contained inside were those who for whatever reason stepped over society’s line of freedom and decency. Some by choice, some out of rage and some simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

They deserve to be in there, some would say. “He’s innocent.” “He’s been set up.” Didn’t matter. They were in there, and I wasn’t.

A stone-cold box with small windows that looked out into fields of lush green corn stocks. A small window that afforded a view of a highway, people moving, life being lived as opposed to just existing.

Sometimes, things are not what they seem – for good or bad

I was up in the Oregon hills a few years back on the way to California. It was a beautiful day. Sun was shining, the air was clear. I surmised that by the time the sun went down, I’d reach my destination of Sacramento.

Now, I was just coming into quiet, quaint little town about to descend down a not so big hill, when I saw that at the bottom of the hill a not-so-big pickup truck was starting its ascent up the hill.

As we drew closer, I could see this wasn’t an ordinary pickup. No, sir; this was

Trudeau’s plan “to get beyond fossil fuels” is as scary as it sounds: McTeague

Transition from what? Transition to what?

Daring to ask what we are transitioning from prompts a lot of anger, for it dares to question the premise that what we have is bad. Key to just transition thinking is that everything past is a problem. This lends weight to the sense of urgency for transition to something good. And what will good be? Incredibly, the goal is a country – and a planet – where people don’t use fossil fuels.

How a scrappy group of truckers brought a G-7 capital to its knees – “Freedom Convoy” excerpt

On the eve of the convoy’s arrival in Ottawa, the streets felt more like a party than a protest. Honks, diesel exhaust, and excitement filled the air. Drivers rounded city blocks blaring their horns, blasting music, and shouting “Freedom!” as they passed cheering gaggles on the sidewalks. The early arrivals—truckers who showed up on their own rather than in the several convoys set to descend on Canada’s capital— staked positions on Wellington St. and its immediate side streets. Many of them wouldn’t leave those spots for three weeks. The scene indoors was just as vibrant. People who only knew each other from Facebook and Telegram groups met for the first time and embraced. Hotels that had sat empty for much of the previous two years filled up.

A year older – are we any wiser?

The propagandists: these are what the average Canadian would call “the media.” Make no mistake, they are all in on the growth of the governmental beast; they directly benefit from it. Consider this: you work, you pay taxes, you pay taxes, you pay taxes. Those hard-earned monies are willfully given to an organization bent on its own survival. In turn, the tax collector distributes your money to propagandists drafting narratives and campaigns designed to bewilder and emotionally charge the taxpayer into believing that both the beast of government and the propagandists are there for your benefit. This scheme is to motivate you to give them more of your hard-earned labour, your emotions, your children, your undivided attention and defense of the overlords. Failure to worship at this altar will eventually be met with scorn and retribution.

A few kinds words, a moment to listen cost nothing

So, this past Saturday I decided I’m going to get up, clean up, walk into that big ole’ truck stop and park my tail in one of them booths in the restaurant. Just take my time at breakfast.

It was early. 6 AM. I was the first one there. So, the waitress was on me with the cutlery, place mat and a cup of coffee that sent my taste buds into a state of ecstasy. Yes Ma’am.
