Are you waiting for Permission?

Waiting for permission is a form of surrender

Let me talk to you about permission.

It is the green light that never comes. The nod that never arrives. The letter that is never sent. The phone call that is never made. The door that is never opened — because you are waiting for someone else to turn the handle.

We have been taught to wait for permission. From the parent. From the teacher. From the boss. From the institution. From the one who holds the title. From the one who has the degree. From the one who was born in the right place, at the right time, to the right people. We have been taught that we cannot begin until we are told we are ready. We cannot speak until we are invited. We cannot build until we are approved. We cannot rise until we are given the green light.

And so we wait. And we wait. And the green light never comes.

What Permission Actually Is
Strip it down. What is permission, really?

Permission is the belief that the authority to begin lives somewhere outside of you. It is the assumption that someone else holds the key to your life. It is the quiet conviction that you are not enough — that you need the validation of another before you can trust yourself.

But permission is not a key. It is a cage. The person who waits for permission is not waiting for a green light. They are waiting for a master. And the master does not come — or the master comes and demands obedience. The master says: You may begin. But you may begin only on my terms.

The permission you seek is rarely given freely. And when it is given, it comes with a leash. The green light is a leash. The approval is a leash. The validation is a leash. And the one who waits for permission becomes the one who is led.

The Waiting Room
The waiting room is the place where dreams go to die. It is the place where the idea sits in the notebook. Where the song sits in the file. Where the business sits in the plan. Where the book sits in the draft. Where the video sits in the folder. Where the testament sits — edited, polished, ready — waiting to be posted.

The waiting room is comfortable. It is safe. It is the place where you can say to yourself: I am preparing. I am getting ready. I am almost there. And so the years pass. And the preparation never becomes the thing. And the readiness never becomes the action. And the green light never comes.

The waiting room is not a room. It is a pattern. It is the habit of substitution — substituting preparation for action. It feels like progress. It looks like progress. It is the illusion of progress. And it is the thief of the life you were meant to live.

The Universal Layer — Permission Beyond the Wound
But the waiting is not only ours. Every human being has waited for permission. The woman in Lagos who waited for her husband’s approval. The man in London who waited for the company to notice him. The child in Seoul who waited for the father to say “I am proud.” The elder in Accra who waited for the community to honour them. The student in Toronto who waited for the mentor to say “You are ready.” The parent in SĂŁo Paulo who waited for their own parent to release them.

The waiting is universal. It is not one people’s curse. It is the price of being taught, at some point, by someone, that your own judgment was not enough. The teacher said it. The parent said it. The system said it. The culture said it. The industry said it. The one with the title said it.

The lie is universal. The waiting is universal. The cage is universal.

And so is the key.

The Deeper Wisdom and Permission
There is a deeper wisdom that did not wait for permission. It did not ask. It did not seek the green light. It began.

It planted the seed before the rain came. It built the fire before the cold arrived. It spoke the truth before the crowd was ready to hear it. It named the child before the elders approved the name. It began the ceremony before the season turned. It made the decision before the consensus was formed.

That wisdom understood something we have forgotten: the authority to begin lives inside the one who begins. The seed does not wait for the soil to be perfect. It begins. The river does not wait for the banks to be fully formed. It flows. The child does not wait to be taught how to walk. The child tries — falls — tries again.

The deeper wisdom did not wait for permission. It gave itself permission. And the world followed.

The Sovereign Response
So what do you do with the waiting?

You do not wait. You do not ask. You do not seek the green light. You give yourself permission.

Not because you have earned it. Not because you are ready. Not because the validation has come. Because waiting for permission is a form of surrender. And the sovereign self does not surrender.

Give yourself permission to begin. To speak. To write. To record. To post. To launch. To fail. To try again. To rise. To build. To become.

You will not feel ready. The green light will not come. The voice in your head will say not yet. And you will do it anyway. Because the permission is not a gift from someone else. It is a decision you make. And once you make it — the cage dissolves.

The Questions
So I ask you today: What are you waiting for permission to do?

Not the polite answer. The real one. The dream you have not started. The book you have not written. The song you have not released. The business you have not launched. The video you have not posted. The conversation you have not had. The truth you have not spoken. The life you have not lived.

Name it. And then ask: Who is the authority? Who is holding the green light? And why have I given them that power?

And the second question: What would you do if you did not need permission?

If you knew the authority was yours. If you knew the green light was already green. If you knew the door was already open. What would you do? Where would you go? What would you build? What would you say?

Do that.

And the third question: What is the nation waiting for permission to do?

The nation is waiting for the West to validate its sovereignty. Waiting for the donors to approve its plans. Waiting for the lenders to release the funds. Waiting for the coloniser’s ghost to bless the new house. Waiting for a green light that no one will ever give.

The nation must give itself permission. Not because the evidence is complete. Because the permission is the evidence.

The Declaration
Permission is not the enemy. It is the illusion. We have been taught to wait. We have been taught to seek the green light. But there is a deeper wisdom. It says: the authority lives inside the one who begins.

So begin. Do not wait for the perfect moment. Do not wait for the nod. Do not wait for the letter. Do not wait for the green light. It is already green. It was always green. The only thing missing was your decision to see it.

You do not need permission. You never did. You need the decision. And the decision is yours.

Now act.

If this touched you, share it with someone who needs to hear it. The nuggets are free. The awakening is priceless.
