CTA Zoom features Ottawa court update
Calgary, Uber ethics, Ontario election also topics covered
The January 30th meeting of the Canadian Taxi Association featured updates on the Metro Taxi vs. City of Ottawa court case, as proceedings are scheduled to resume on February 10th.
“The purpose of these sessions will be to discuss aggregate damages,” class action counsel Marion Sandilands of Conway Litigation told two dozen participants on the Zoom call.
Court proceedings scheduled for February 10 to February 14th are expected to be available for the public to view by videoconference link, as they have been in the past. However, this service may be subject to late decisions or technical issues; Taxi News will post the link provided by the court every day, in addition to providing frequent updates.
Sandilands also encouraged industry member to visit Conway’s dedicated web page, “METRO TAXI LTD. et al v. THE CITY OF OTTAWA” which contains copious amounts of information including case updates, news releases and documents filed.
Also speaking to provide an impromptu update on the situation in Calgary was Kurt Enders of Checker Cabs. In Calgary, which is considering a suite of changes to its vehicle for hire laws, Uber has filed a complaint with Alberta’s Privacy Commissioner rather than provide specific location data to the City.
“We have been providing this information for 15 years, so we don’t know what the sudden fuss is all about,” said Enders.
The January 30 CTA Zoom ended with video clips from the December 18th US Federal Trade Commission webinar “Competition Snuffed Out: How Predatory Pricing Harms Competition, Consumers, and Innovation.”
The FTC is taking particular interest in predatory pricing and junk fees which hurt consumers, and used Uber as one of it primary examples of how Venture Capital funds are subsidizing harmful practices.
