Accused in custody pending bail hearing in Oshawa court January 17

A man faces charges after he grabbed the steering wheel of an Uber in which he was riding, causing it to crash into a transport truck, nsauga reports.

“A video circulating on social media shows the incident unfolding on Highway 412 at Taunton Road in Whitby on Jan. 15, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt has confirmed,” nsauga describes the alarming video. “At the start of the video driver and passenger calmly driving along the highway. A woman and children are in the back seats of the vehicle.

“Without warning, the man grabs the steering wheel and turns the vehicle into a passing transport truck.

The driver shouts, ‘What are you doing?’

“The man grabs the wheel again and the vehicle sideswipes the transport. The driver gains control and stops the vehicle. The passenger then gets out and runs. The driver and a woman in the back seat also get out before the video ends,” nsauga writes.

Kerry Schmidt of the OPP confirms “The front seat passenger in a taxi is charged with dangerous driving and mischief endangering life and damage to property. This is after a collision involving a tractor trailer and the taxi. The incident occurred on #Hwy412/Taunton Rd., Jan 15, 5pm.,no injuries by any of the involved occupants, #WhitbyOPP investigating. The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing in Oshawa court – 9am Jan 17, ’25. ^ks”
