Chaos, confusion over EV mandates
On January 13th, auto makers were reeling over Canada’s announcement it is ending its Zero-Emission Vehicles (iMHZEV) Program.
“After informing Canadians on Friday that the iZEV program would run out of funds to assist Canadians in purchasing electric vehicle prior to its March 31st, 2025, Transport Canada has this morning announced the complete wind down of the program,” said David
Adams, President & CEO of Global Automakers of Canada said in a statement on January 13th.
“Today’s announcement only adds to the chaos and confusion that began with Friday’s announcement. I’ve not seen anything like this before and certainly sends the wrong message to Canadians looking to purchase an EV by a government that wants them to do so,” added Adams.
In a short statement offering little information on January 10th, Transport Canada noted that while “the iZEV Program has been a huge success. Over 546,000 vehicles have been incented through this program since it began, helping Canada reach a new ZEV market share of 11.7% in 2023.”
Transport Canada says the the program will in fact “pause” on March 31, 2024 “or once all the available funding has been accessed by Canadians. Canadians will benefit from incentives until Program funds are exhausted.”
