Not Beck, not a Taxi: man pinned by own car in laneway

On Monday, January 29, 2024, at approximately 7 p.m., police received a report of a Personal Injury collision involving a pedestrian in an alleyway in the Gerrard Street East and Broadview Avenue area. Early media reports claimed that a Beck Taxi fare was pinned by the cab in a laneway.

Taxi News has learned that it was not a Beck Taxi but simply a car painted orange on a food delivery. The injured party was not a fare but rather, the driver of the vehicle.

It is reported that:

  • a 59-year-old man got out of his car to deliver an order
  • while outside of his car, the car was set in motion and struck the man
  • the man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries

The investigation is ongoing by members of Traffic Services.

Police are asking local residents, business and drivers, who may have security or dash camera footage of the area or incident, to contact investigators.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-1900, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), or at www.222tips.com.
